Yann: 没错. 我听说那边卖的东西都不便宜. 跟台湾差很多.

Adam: That means “to start” or “to begin.”
Raphael: 然后今天的第一个生字是

Adam: There are two characters there. The second we already know means “money.” And the first here means “to save”, giving us “to save money.”
Kirin: 我要从现在开始存钱了.
Adam: “I’m going to start saving money now.”

Adam: That means “to plan.”

Adam: The literal meaning is “outside country”, which ends up meaning “abroad” or “overseas.”

Adam: That means “to travel.”
Raphael: 所以这个句子是什么意思?
Kirin: 我打算明年要出国旅游.
Adam: “Next year, I plan to travel abroad.”
Raphael: 然后这个女生问

Adam: “So do you need a lot of money?”
Raphael: 然后这个男生回答
Kirin: 没错.
Adam: This literally means “not wrong.” We’ve seen it before though so we know it means “Right.”
Kirin: 没错. 我听说那边卖的东西都不便宜.
Raphael: 你们记得 便宜 是什么意思吗？ 是 贵 的相反.
Adam: And that of course means “cheap.”
Kirin: 我听说那边卖的东西都不便宜.
Adam: “I heard that the things they sale there aren’t cheap.”
Raphael: 然后他继续说
Kirin: 跟台湾差很多.
Raphael: 这个差是 差不多 的差.
Adam: It literally means “difference.” So 差不多 which we’ve learned means “almost”, has a literal meaning of “not a big difference.”
Kirin: 跟台湾差很多.
Adam: The literal meaning here is “with Taiwan difference a lot”, which means “It’s very different from Taiwan.”
Kirin: 跟台湾差很多.
Raphael: 然后这个女生问
Kirin: 所以你要怎么存钱？
Adam: The literal meaning here is “So you want how save money.” In other words, “So how are you going to save money?”
Kirin: 所以你要怎么存钱？
Raphael: 然后这个男生回答
Kirin: 从现在开始，我会把我每一个月薪水一部分的钱拿出来放在银行存起来.
Raphael: 在这个句子里,我们看到今天的下一个生字
Kirin: 薪水.
Adam: And that means “salary.” This is a long sentence, so let’s break it down into parts.
Kirin: 从现在开始.
Adam: “From now on”
Kirin: 我会把我每一个月薪水.
Adam: “I will take my monthly salary”
Kirin: 一部分的钱拿出来.
Adam: “Take out a portion of the money”
Kirin: 放在银行存起来.
Adam: “Put it in the bank and start saving.” Note the 存起来 construction. The 起来 signifies the beginning of an action. So he is going to start saving. Previously, we’ve seen this construction for
Kirin: 看起来
Adam: and
Kirin: 听起来
Adam: which mean “looks like” and “sounds like”, respectively. In both cases, the speaker is describing his initial impression as the action has just started.
Kirin: 从现在开始，我会把我每一个月薪水一部分的钱拿出来放在银行存起来.
Raphael: 然后这个女生说
Kirin: 我觉得你很幸运.
Adam: “I think you’re very lucky.”
Kirin: 因为在很多人的生活中只有工作跟上课.
Raphael: 这里,我们看到今天的最后一个生字
Kirin: 生活.
Adam: And that means “life.”
Kirin: 因为在很多人的生活中只有工作跟上课.
Adam: “Because in many people’s lives, they only have work and school.” Note how we’re using the character 中 here meaning “middle.” So she’s saying “in the middle of many people’s lives.” She could also have said
Kirin: 因为在很多人的生活里.
Raphael: 然后她继续说
Kirin: 他们很少有机会可以出国旅游.
Raphael: 这个少是 多少 的少.
Adam: And that means “few.” Together 很少 means “very few” which is used to say “on very few occasions” as in “seldom.”
Raphael: 那你们记得 机会 是什么意思吗？
Adam: That means “chance.”
Kirin: 他们很少有机会可以出国旅游.
Adam: “They seldom have a chance to travel abroad.”
